Whatever Wednesdays Part 3

WHAT ARE WE WORKING ON?

Sweetest Sentence Sort
We are hard at work in class on all things sentence structures.  We started out the year with understanding simple sentences vs. fragments and introduced sentence content vocabulary.  Well, now we have introduced compound sentences and more sentence content vocabulary.  We believe it's important for our students to be able to identify
different types of sentence structures and talk the language of discipline.  To help them, we are working on a sentence sort.  This sentence sort appropriately has a February theme.

WHAT ARE WE LOVING?

Mapping Out The Test
When we get back from winter break, that means it is time to start getting our 4th graders ready for state testing.  One activity that we have found helpful is "mapping out the test".  Basically, we take a paired passage and have our students read it with a partner.  Next, they cut out the passage and glue it down the center of a large anchor chart paper.  Then they start answering the questions by proving their answers.  Once they find the text evidence, they cut out the questions and glue it next to where they located the answer in the passage.  Our students enjoy highlighting and drawing arrows too.  Our students are always amazed out how long it takes them to complete it.  We are hoping they will slow down on the real thing and prove those answers.

WHAT ARE WE READING?

Garvey's Choice
If you are looking for a great read aloud, that involves a lot of inference skills on your student's part.  Look no further.  It's written in verse, so it will be a book you can finish in a reasonable amount of time.  We know that sometimes it seems impossible to finish a long novel in class, so this book is just the cure!  If you are interested in a copy, HERE is a Amazon link.

WHAT ARE WE EATING?

Sausage, Peppers, & Onions
This is a super simple and quick meal, you need to try! I got it from the awesome blog Mix Match Mama.  She has tons of recipe ideas!!

2 (14 oz) packages of fully cooked kielbasa style sausage links, cut into rounds
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
salt and pepper
2 red bell peppers, sliced
1 green bell pepper, sliced
3 cloves of garlic, chopped
1 onion, chopped
2 (8 oz) cans of tomato sauce
cooked and ready to eat rice for serving, optional
In a large pan over medium-high heat, add in your sausage rounds with a generous drizzle olive oil.  Take a few minutes to brown up the sausage on both sides.  Add in a big pinch of both salt and pepper.  Next, add in a bit more olive oil along with your sliced bell peppers, garlic and onion.  Saute the veggies and sausage together until the veggies are tender.  Add in a bit more salt and pepper. Next, stir in your tomato sauce and let everything come up to a simmer.  Once it’s simmering, remove from heat and serve.
